Announcing Stumar Press

Posted by Stuart Hughes on August 31, 2011 at 3:40 AM Comments comments (0)

Stumar Press are delighted to announce themselves as a new independent publisher with the publication of the Derby Scribes 2011 Anthology – containing eleven short stories by Simon Clark, Conrad Williams, Neal James and members of the Derby Scribes writing group.

The aim is to publish horror and fantasy fiction, concentrating primarily on eBook editions available through Amazon, for the Kindle, and Smashwords on a variety of other platforms. Print book editions for some titles will also be available.

Focussing on short stories of horror and the macabre, Stumar Press are looking to publish titles as either single author collections, or anthologies by a variety of authors.

Next up for Stumar Press will be Soul Screams, a collection of twelve short stories by horror and crime novelist Sara-Jayne Townsend. News on further titles will be available soon.

Editor Stuart Hughes has previous experience as the former editor of the British Fantasy Award winning Peeping Tom magazine. Stuart says, “To be honest I blame Peter Mark May. When he first floated the idea of his Alt-Dead anthology he asked for volunteers to help on the editing side. Like an idiot I volunteered and, to my surprise, discovered I enjoyed it and still had a knack for it. About that time, Mark West was promoting ‘ill at ease’ and I got talking to him about the wonderful world of eBooks. We found we had a similar vision and the idea for Stumar Press was born.

“As editor, I’ll be bringing the same values and principles to our titles as I applied to Peeping Tom. That is, to say, we’ll be looking to publish the best fiction we can and our attention to detail and editing standards will be high.”

Publisher Mark West says, “When I first got into the small press, about a decade ago, Peeping Tom was one of those markets that I really wanted to crack but it wasn’t until much later, via the wonder of Facebook, that I was finally able to ‘meet’ Stuart. We got talking, since we were both involved ‘behind-the-scenes’ on Alt-Dead and at the time, I was also working on ‘ill at ease’. As a dedicated paper-and-ink man, I was disappointed that a lot of Kindle/Smashwords material was – to put it simply – very poor and wanted to prove that there was a place for intelligent, keenly-edited, sharply designed eBooks. As a shared vision, Stuart and I decided to pool our resources and see what happened and Stumar Press is the end result.

“With an editor of Stuart’s calibre, it makes perfect sense to have him doing what he does best. I’ll be concentrating on the publishing side, getting the formatting produced to the highest quality and ensuring that the artwork and design is always eye-catching.”

Stumar Press are currently looking for short story collections to publish and are inviting author pitches. They are also interested in publishing an eBook version of previously published print edition short story collections where the author has retained copyright and no eBook edition exists.
